About Story Compass and Creative Studio
The guide, not the guru.
She believes that creativity can help us see ourselves and our possibilities differently and empower us to live as our true selves. Dorothy’s work brings together reflection, creative exploration and expression, and the idea that making space for what is emerging can help us notice what we already know, what we want, and what may be possible next.
A creative at heart, Dorothy spent years living more from her rational, logical side, while her right brained-self longed to thrive. Her professional background as a leader across management consulting, telecommunications, and consumer products spans business development, strategy, marketing, and organizational change.
Dorothy Vollmer founded Story Compass out of her own experiences and deep interest in the intersection of story, creativity, and change.
At the core, Dorothy is a storyteller, actress, and artist. She has professional film and television credits, stage experience, and she writes and paints regularly. She has increasingly trusted her intuition and credits that with opening up her own creative nature. Dorothy believes we all have intuition and that it helps guide us, when we let it.
Dorothy is also a trained facilitator and coach who designed and guided strategy and implementation planning sessions for senior executives and their teams at Fortune 500 companies for close to a decade. She has an MBA from USC’s Marshall School of Business and a BA in economics from Davidson College (though her favorite classes were English Composition, Shakespeare, and Drawing).
Story Compass brings these threads together: story reflection, creativity, and the belief that when we make enough space and time to hear ourselves, we can notice what’s emerging and see ourselves and our next choices more clearly. Her years of professional facilitation and session design prepared her to create Story Compass.
In Creative Studio, Dorothy guides the day through Story Compass reflections that help open up and unlock creativity and awareness. She also works alongside the group on her own creative projects.
Story Compass Creative Studio may be for you if…
You’ve been wanting to give yourself and your creativity more attention.
You have creative work you keep meaning to start or return to, but are struggling to get going.
You have an idea you want to explore or flesh out, but every day life and handling everything else is crowding it out.
You want more dedicated time and special space for your creative practice, while being able to experiment with materials and mediums.
You want to write, paint, make something with your hands, drift and daydream, explore your intuition, or simply hear yourself more clearly.
You want to be in community and connection with other women nurturing their creativity.
You do not need to call yourself an artist, a writer, or anything at all. You are creative as you are.
Creative or artistic experience is not required.
Some helpful information.
Is Story Compass Creative Studio a class?
This is not a traditional art or writing class. It is a creative session, with guided reflections framed by Story Compass™ and opportunities for additional guidance. The bulk of the time, though, is intentionally yours.
Can I bring my own supplies, food, and drink?
Yes, bring anything you want to work on not listed in materials provided. Oil paint is permitted outside. There is a full kitchen available for your use, though we provide coffee, tea, water, and snacks.
What materials does Creative Studio provide?
We provide a large selection of high-quality paint (watercolor, acrylic, tempera), brushes, pencils and pens, paper and canvas, beads for jewelry making, and stamps / ink.
What if I don’t feel creative, but want to try something?
Then Creative Studio may be a wonderful place to begin. It’s an open, low-pressure space to explore different mediums and follow your curiosity, with a vast library of books to learn from.
What does a typical Creative Studio Day look like?
We begin with a card and a short Story Compass reflection, provided in your Creative Studio Journal. We also close with a reflection. The time in between is open for your own creative work and exploration and everyone can take breaks, eat, and stretch as they wish.
Do I need to be working on a specific project?
You do not have to have chosen how you want to use your time. Some women arrive with an idea of what they want to work on, while others decide in the moment. There is no right approach.
What is the cancellation or change policy?
You may switch to another Creative Studio Day, space permitting, up to 48 hours before your registered date. Registration is non-refundable.
Can I come by myself if I don’t know anyone or live nearby?
Absolutely. We welcome women from anywhere. Creative Studio is a great way to meet other women who also want to give themselves more time and space for their creativity.
Where is Creative Studio located?
In Serenbe, which is in Chattahoochee Hills, GA about 30 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta. The exact location is provided after registration.
What are the types of creative work women do?
Women often write, paint, or draw. Many do all three in one session. Others bring their materials for fiber or textile work, collage, scrapbooking, and more.
Can someone else use my spot if I cannot attend?
Yes, you can transfer your registration. Simply email us with your replacement’s contact information so that we can connect with her.
How many women are in each Creative Studio Day?
Creative Studio is intentionally small, with no more than six women. This keeps the space comfortable, gives everyone room to spread out and focus, and allows for meaningful connection.
